The Hills

Maria Susannah Newman (1792-1859) was the youngest sister of John Newman (1772-1824). In 1814, at St. Martin's-in-the-Fields she married Edmund Hill, a druggist.

She received £100 bequest from her brother, Hugh (1827), half the residue of the estate of her uncle, Thomas Newman (1828) and the interest from £300 stock invested in 3% Consolidated or Reduced Annuities in her sister’s will (1830), so was left financially comfortable. The 1841 and 1851 Census shows the Hills living at 33 James Street, Newington, Surrey.

Her eldest son, Edmund Hugh Hill (1815-1904) was a cabinet maker in Newington and progenitor of a large family which settled in Camberwell. He kept in close contact with his Newman relations and often visited his cousin's son, Hugh Thomas Newman (1828-1913) to talk about family affairs. It was said that he knew more about the Newmans than anyone and he told them many stories of the old days in Epsom and of the family's lost estates, which fascinated later generations. Just as Edmund Hill perpetuated the old Newman name of Hugh, so Edmond John Newman (born 1881) was named after his Hill kinsman, albeit with a variant spelling.
