Photographs

Postby Grant Newman » Thu May 07, 2009 7:58 am

Hello everyone
I am enjoying reading all the various posts and introductions but it occurred to me that it might be rather nice to be able to put a name to the face. How about each member posting their photograph on the site? I notice that Adam Newman has already done that with his introduction.
So I will follow suit and you will all notice that I still play the violin !!
Hope to see you all in due course.
Warmest greetings to all the family.

Great idea! I've just moved the topic though just to be in a more suitable place, hope you don't mind.

Certainly photos make identification a little easier when faced with the issue of sorting out who's who in the family. For obvious reasons the forthcoming book has had to be limited to Newmans, whereas quite a few of the most enthusiastic family genealogists are Newman descendants, but don't have the name. Hence the inclusion of the section on the website dealing with distaff families !

I'm attaching a photograph of my mother, Joyce Edwards, taken this February at her 95th birthday celebrations. My brother, Howard, is on the left and I'm on the right. Joyce is the daughter of Alice Sarah Lavinia Newman (1889-1972) and William Horace Lewis.

There are, however, currently two older Newman ladies who are also equally alert mentally. "Bubbles" (Mabel Mary Ashby, nee Newman), was born on 1 December 1911, the eldest daughter of Albert Samuel Newman (1881-1917) whilst "Peggy" (Margaret Irene Enticknap, nee Townsend) was born on 7 December 1913. She is a granddaughter of Tom the Sailor. Her early memories of the Newmans in Richmond and St. Margarets are perceptive and detailed and she has proved an invaluable resource in compiling my book. Here again, the issue of Newman longevity could make another fascinating thread for future exploration.

Speaking as you were of Mabel Alice, aka Bubbles attached is a photograph of her with the younger of her two daughters Pam. Bubbles is the surviving sister of my Mother, Dorothy and she will be 98 in December. Her recall is extraordinary and she has been able to tell me so much about their young life and about some of the aunts and uncles etc. I was lucky to know her on and off all my life without knowing how close a relative she was. When I discovered my Newman lineage she was one of the first people I went to see. I had not seen her for about 25 years and it was an emotional reunion. She was just exactly as I had always remembered her, a gentle, jolly lady and she is still the same today. She is now in a home near Dover and I visit her as often as possible. My cousin Pam now lives in Spain with her second husband, Ian Smith, but her sister Pat lives very close to Bubbles at Capel Le Ferne near Folkestone and she sees her Mother at least once a week. I would like to think that Bill's comment about longevity on the distaff side may extend to some of the survivng Newman men if we are lucky.

The attached photograph shows four Newman cousins, all granddaughters of Hugh John Newman (1850-1932):
Newman cousins2.jpg

From left to right are:
1. Dorothy Edith Layzell (nee Newman) 1915-2000, second daughter of Albert Samuel Newman (1881-1917), who is the mother of Grant Newman;
2. Joyce Alice Edwards (nee Lewis), born 1914, daughter of Alice Sarah Lavinia Lewis (nee Newman) 1889-1972, my mother;
3. Marjorie (Madge) Stovell (nee Fiddy), 1906-1991, daughter of Ellen Elizabeth Fiddy (nee Newman) 1878-1966; and
4. Mabel Mary (Bubbles) Ashby (nee Newman), born 1911, eldest daughter of Albert Samuel Newman (1881-1917).

These Newman cousins kept in touch all their lives and good contact has continued to be maintained with the next generation of second cousins.

Both Dorothy and Madge were 84 when they died, whilst Joyce and Bubbles are still with us. There was a fifth female cousin, absent when the photograph was taken, Maud Beatrice Angelina Cattell (nee Newman), 1906-2006, eldest daughter of Hugh James Newman (1874-1954) who died just six months short of her centenary. This would suggest a general longevity in this particular branch of the family, among the women at least !

I thought it was about time to post a photograph of my Great Aunt Peg (Margaret Irene Enticknap, nee Townsend) who is the daughter of Maria Louisa Newman and was born on 7 December 1913 so is 96 today. She is a granddaughter of Tom the Sailor. She lives at Petersfield in Hampshire and we talk regularly on the phone, usually as a result of my sending her various enquiries about the family. She has an acute memory and has been able to supply Bill and myself with a vast amount of invaluable information. In the photograph I was recording her reminiscing earlier this year and she was talking about various photographs which I was able to show her on the laptop. The earlier photograph shows her in 1931.
