Newmans in Dorking & Epsom (pre 1784)
The Newmans first originated in Surrey, appearing in the Dorking Parish registers from 1620 for the next hundred years. The move to Epsom around 1680 lasted a further century, although the last of the family was buried there in 1830.

Joseph Potter & the Newmans
A remarkable man: mariner, constable and parish beadle, Joseph Potter not only proved an important influence on his Newman grandchildren but also wrote his memoirs when he was 83.

London & Southwark (post 1784)
John Newman's 1784 move to Southwark, then at the northern end of the County of Surrey, saw the family settled in Lambeth, Newington & Walworth, combined with spells in the City of London and the neighbouring Westminster parish of St. Clement Danes in the Strand.
